The Guinand Duograph - Chrono Klassik is the result of a collaboration of enthusiasts - quality journalism from Frankfurt am Main on the part of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and high-quality mechanical watches built by Guinand in Frankfurt. What began with the auction of the prototype of the HS100 to the benefit of the F.A.Z.-Aktion "Leser helfen" ("Helping Readers"), finds its consistent continuation in this jointly developed watch.
The Duograph-Chrono Classic is a mechanical chronograph with an especially clear dial in the tradition of the Guinand series 40 pilot chronograph - 2 stop totalizers together with the central stop second enable stop time measurements up to 12 hours. The permanent running small seconds, which disturbs the dial symmetry in almost all mechanical chronographs, was abandoned - in favor of the size of the two stop totalizers. The Duo-Chronograph classic reminds of the exciting and adventurous beginnings of the aviation with its well-readable clocks with stop function, which were an important item of equipment - even essential for survival.
Large numbers coated with luminous color and hands coated the same way in front of a low-reflective, matt black dial are the indispensable features of an aircraft watch. For the first time for the FAZ-and- Guinand-model Duograph Chrono Klassik we combine the historically inspired hourly numbers with objective straight-forward minute divisions and large stop counters to create an extraordinary watch. The tip of the seconds hand is designed with this watch with blue color by hand. The 0-minute reference on the black flying bezel is designed with a blue luminous mass and covered by a sapphire crystal. The Duo-Chrono Classic is equipped with a Valjoux chronograph movement in the quality level using Glucydur balance.
The Series 40 and its predecessors have been manufactured by Guinand for more than 50 years for professional users, such as Pilots. Back then as well as today, the highest priority is optimum readability, robust design and good wearing characteristics - in the cockpit and in everyday life. The flight bezel made of light metal can be steplessly turned in either direction, enabling short-term stops of up to 60 minutes without starting the chronograph.
Protected pushers and a screw-down crown with a double O-ring seal ensure a reliable pressure resistance of 20 bar. The watch is equipped with scratch-resistant sapphire crystals on the front and on the back. Through the caseback with sapphire crystal you see the self winding element on which, in addition to the limited edition number, the F.A.Z. renowned signet “of the clever mind” is engraved.
The Valjoux 7750 is regarded as the most matured and reliable chronograph caliber ever - developed in the 1970s and continously improved, it is probably the most robust power source for a mechanical Pilot Chronograph. The ETA, manufacturer of watch movements, supplies Guinand with the movement for this watch in a decorated version with Perlage, Geneva stripes, blued screws and Glucydur balance. At Guinand each of these movements is regulated once again in 5 positions before the final control of the watch ends with an accuracy test of several days.
Apart from the watch, you will also notice the sophistication of the leather strap - for the first time in a series produced strap, IVN-certified, chrome-free and vegetable-tanned nappa cowhide is used, which is dyed only with heavy metal-free colors. Its discreetly elegant appearance and pleasant grip are the result of a manufacturing process that combines traditional tanneries with modern technical processes.
The leather for the production of this band comes from Germany and is also processed here to become a leather strap. Valonea leather is used for the lining of the strap, and it is given its color only by tanning it with the herbal agent with the same name.
