Guinand is a pioneer in Chronographs from the very start and has been active in aviation for more than 100 years with time-measuring instruments.

The watch

For our new SFL chronograph, we have therefore been able to draw on our wealth of experience in stopwatches. Just as 70 years ago, when the 60-minute stopper was produced, today's functionality is still at the forefront and determines the construction and design of the watch. The SFL-Bezel (Steel-Flight-Lunette) takes up the construction of the then 12-turnturning torque and transfers the basic idea to the timepiece which is no longer worn on the thigh but instead on the wrist.

The housing

It was our 40-series model that was the natural inspiration in the development of the SFL chronograph, and from this model it adopted the basic housing. Carrying crown protection, protected pushers and the new SFL bezel, the watch is optimally designed for the most adversed harsh environmental condition.

The bezel

The new SFL bezel has been constructed from stainless steel and has laser engraved numbers and minutes. The bezel is thus not printed or equipped with a printed inlay, whose printing can be scratched, but is continuously made of stainless steel. The SFL bezel can be steplessly turned in both directions, allowing short-term stops up to 60 minutes without starting the chronograph. The SFL bezel is 100% compatible with our standard light alloy pilot bezel.

The strap

For the SFL chronograph, we have developed a new leather strap. Our Outback-strap is made of leather, which is almost twice as strong, 50% better tear-resistant than cowhide leather, and only half as much water absorbing. Of course, all our leather and rubber tapes can also be combined with the watch.

Test-bench for straps

For the SFL-Chrono, we have developed a test bench where we can simulate a long-term load on the entire watch watchstrap system consisting of watch case, spring bar, leather strap and clasp. In addition to the short-term tear test that takes seconds or maximum some minutes, we test over hours and days. This is the only way to believe that reliable results can be demonstrated regarding the mechanical stability of a strap construction.

The dial

For the SFL-Chronograph, we have for the first time developed a dial, in which the best-readable DIN font is used consistently. The stop subdials are clearly delineated from the rest of the dial, none of the hour digits of the dial are cut and the numbers are taken back. Large, slightly wedge-shaped hour indices with white luminescent hour indices and full hour and minute markers ensure the best readability and the distinctive instrument character of this pilot chronograph.
